BMI Index Calculator
Ramblings on Thursday, April 13th, 2006
For people who are considered obese (BMI greater than or equal to 30) or those who are overweight (BMI of 25 to 29.9) and have two or more risk factors (such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure), the guidelines recommend weight loss.
Even a small weight loss (just 10 percent of your current weight) will help to lower your risk of developing diseases associated with obesity.
BMI is not a really useful tool because:
- If you’re very fat the mirror will tell you
- It can be wildly inaccurate. I’m in the “overweight” category, but my body fat is 8.5%
- If you’re about the right weight you’ll know it.
- The things that I think are important to measure are:
- Weight - do it every day
- Blood pressure
- Labs (blood and urine)
- Body fat - skinfold done by a pro will be the best guide.
